Take in the spectacular features of Cataract Gorge from this single-span chairlift. Take in the spectacular features of the Cataract Gorge from this famous chairlift. View the South Esk River in a serene or turbulent mood after a flood as well as tree rhododendrons and fern glades.

In 1972, a magnificent chairlift was built spanning the huge natural basin often filled by the surging waters of the South Esk River. The chairlift covers some 457 metres, with the Main Station at the First Basin (Basin Road, West Launceston) where there is plenty of parking and takes you into the Cliff Grounds Reserve & the Cataract Gorge.

The central span of 308 metres is the longest single chairlift span in the world.

Seating is designed for complete safety and includes a safety bar which can be operated by either the passenger or attendant.

The slow speed of the chairlift enables passengers to appreciate fully and photograph the spectacular views of this ancient rock gorge.

If travelling by car – follow the signs from Frederick Street or GPS Basin Road
