Puffing Billy - Australia's Favourite Steam Train

Puffing Billy is one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world.

The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental narrow (2’6”) gauge lines constructed in Victoria to develop rural areas in the early 1900s. Today, Puffing Billy is now a major tourist attraction, its operation dependant on hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

Bring along your family or a group of friends for a magnificent day out in the Dandenong Ranges! The journey takes you from the township of Belgrave, over the historic Trestle Bridge in the Sherbrooke Forest (a magnificent place to take that unforgettable photo) and past the site of the 1953 Landslide before arriving into Emerald Township. From here, Puffing Billy takes you past the historic Nobelius Packing Shed, to Emerald Lake Park and then onwards to Cockatoo and Gembrook.

Alternatively, train enthusiasts may enjoy the unique experience of driving a steam train!

Group bookings on all scheduled trains may be made and special charter trains for groups of up to 250 are available. Special Interest" groups can also be catered for with escorted tours.

The railway runs daily except Christmas Day, with trains departing from Belgrave, located only one hour east of Melbourne and easily accessible by Metro train or car.

Murder on the Puffing Billy Express! Join us for an intriguing night of murder, mystery and suspense aboard Puffing Billy's evening dinner train special. Come dressed as your favourite Agatha Christie character. Prizes offered to the best dressed!
Jazz on Puffing Billy Railway will be trumpeting along with live Jazz music with the Mast Gully Quartet, great local wines and a dinner in the historic Nobelius Packing Shed. From the moment you board at Puffing Billy's Belgrave station platform, your feet will be tapping as you take the fun-filled journey through the Dandenong Ranges all the way up to the historic restored Packing Shed.

Puffing Billy’s Great Train Race

The 2011 Great Train Race will take place on Sunday 1st May. The race starts in Belgrave and finishes at Emerald Lake Park, covering a distance of 13.2 kilometres in the Dandenong Ranges. The Great Train Race is organised by Puffing Billy Railway volunteers and all proceeds go towards the maintenance of Puffing Billy’s family of locomotives. This iconic fun run has been a success ever since the humble beginning in 1982!
